It took 12 years of research including 2 masters and more than 70+ grant applications to get our first round of funding which did not come from any traditional source.

Cryptocurrency community Cardano voted, for the first time, to finance the development of environmental monitoring.

Project Catalyst is the VC and accelerator instrument of Cardano that is investing $1 million USD into startups through its native token ada.

Holders of the ada token get to vote on what proposals to fund, which was raised by putting a small tax on cryptocurrency transactions. …

Thanks to the help of some volunteers, we were able to get the OpenLitterMap app translated into several new languages.

https://twitter.com/OpenLitterMap/status/1348259844642504705

More languages are currently being worked on and integrated, including Arabic, Turkish and Portuguese.

Can you help with more translations? Maybe you can find a bug, or suggest a better way of doing things? There a lot of improvements that can be made in the code, and we are not yet sure how to encode special characters like Portuguese and Arabic (which is why they are not released yet).

A stretch of open data on litter, brands and plastic pollution in Wassenaar, The Netherlands https://openlittermap.com/world/The%20Netherlands/Zuid-Holland/Wassenaar/map

So far, OpenLitterMap has been almost entirely developed by 1 person. This was my first attempt at a web-app and it took some time to get ready to manage an open source project.

I had hoped to achieve a grant to…

Hi folks,

Pleased to share with you that OpenLitterMap is now available for iOS and Android

As you upload data, sign up for an account, add new locations to the database or mine Littercoin, live event notifications will be broadcasted to anyone looking at the global map.

Happy mapping!

OpenLitterMap is a citizen science platform that empowers anyone to map and share data on plastic pollution anywhere. So far, it has been built entirely by 1 person. This is his story.

Back in 2006, I finished secondary / high-school. That summer, we got connected to the internet at home. This was a remarkable turning point because instead of being bored to tears by mundane content imposed on us through an archaic education system, I could finally begin learning for myself.

I always wanted to learn how to use a computer (to build games, websites and collaborate on different projects)…

OpenLitterMap.com empowers anyone to map and share data on plastic pollution anywhere.

Not only is OpenLitterMap data mapped, but more importantly, anyone can download all of the data for free, and use it, for any purpose, without permission.

We call this free and unrestricted right to access data “Open Data” as the data is free to download and comes with complete freedom of use. The only restriction with what open data can be used for is someone’s imagination. Even in this crazy technological boom-time and rapid global awareness of the destruction of plastic in the environment, litter mapping is a new field of Citizen Science that remains largely unexplored, and will continue…

Most data collection apps ***don’t share data***. Closed data makes advancing research and eradicating pollution incredibly problematic.

Here are 3 reasons why Open Data is Important

1. Anyone can download open data for free.

- Having free access to data allows anyone to participate in the research. When anyone can access data, science is open, transparent and democratized. This allows us to advance research and solve problems at an unrestricted speed. Surely, plastic or any other kind of pollution deserves no less.

2. Open data has complete freedom of use.

- Open data is not just free to download, but has complete freedom of use. Anyone can use open data, for any purpose, without permission or restriction. This is important to allow unrestricted access to scientific investigation. Otherwise, what limits will be imposed on what can be done with the data? When…

Plastic pollution was first recognised to have a global distribution in the marine environment as early as 1975.

Due to the obvious lack of governance, I am looking for partners to start the Global Commission on Plastic Pollution.

Email me if you would like to help set this up !

global@openlittermap.com

I am also looking for 6+ developers in PHP, JavaScript, Python & Solidity, crowdfunding, grants, partners & more.

OpenLitterMap applies blockchain Proof of Work mining principles to Citizen Science for the first time and rewards people with Littercoin for doing the work. Our vision is to create an incentive to reward people for Cleaning The Planet which can save us potentially trillions in environmental damage. A whitepaper on the specifics will launch when it’s ready. With enough incentive, I believe it will be possible to get a good picture of the world’s plastic pollution in as little as 15 minutes.

Every day, somewhere- plastic quietly slips into the ocean. Over 12 months, this is believed to be…

My first peer-reviewed paper was published recently

You can find a link to it here

I was also asked to write a blog about my research for Springer Open, which quickly became their most read blog post!

Check out this awesome stretch of open data on the pollution caused by the products of a handful of global corporations

Want to download the data? Okay!
